Seasonal Cough & Upper Respiratory Resilience Herbal Tea
Seasonal Cough & Upper Respiratory Resilience Herbal Tea is a Functional Master Herbal Formulation created to support throat comfort, healthy cough response, mucus movement, upper-respiratory tissue integrity, inflammatory balance, circulation, and restorative recovery during periods of seasonal respiratory stress
Coughing is not an isolated symptom. It is part of a protective respiratory response influenced by mucus production, airway irritation, inflammatory signaling, respiratory tissue condition, nervous-system tone, and the body’s ability to move secretions appropriately.
This formulation was built around those interconnected processes rather than simply attempting to suppress the cough reflex. Licorice root, sage, ginger, cinnamon, and mullein provide complementary support for irritated throat and upper-respiratory tissues, mucus movement, expectoration, inflammatory regulation, circulation, and respiratory comfort. Licorice and mullein provide soothing support for irritated mucous membranes while also supporting healthy expectoration. Sage contributes focused upper-respiratory and throat support through its astringent, aromatic, and tissue-balancing properties. Ginger and cinnamon provide warming circulatory, digestive, antioxidant, and inflammatory support, helping maintain comfortable movement and resilience during periods of seasonal illness or respiratory strain.
Whole-System Cough & Upper Respiratory Support
Healthy respiratory function requires both movement and protection.
Mucus must be able to move and clear appropriately, while throat and airway tissues also need protection from repeated irritation. Supporting one without the other can leave the respiratory system either overly irritated or unable to move secretions effectively.
For this reason, this formulation supports the upper respiratory, mucosal, inflammatory, circulatory, digestive, and nervous systems together, helping maintain comfortable respiratory function while supporting the tissues involved in coughing and recovery. It may be particularly appropriate during seasonal illness, head colds, lingering throat irritation, productive or dry cough patterns, post-nasal drainage, or when coughing interferes with rest and recovery.
Optional Valerian Variation
For individuals experiencing repetitive, spasmodic, or nighttime coughing that becomes more pronounced when lying down and interferes with sleep, valerian root may be added as an optional variation. In this version, valerian provides additional nervous-system and smooth-muscle support while helping promote rest during periods when repeated coughing prevents the body from settling. The valerian variation is intended for adults and is not appropriate for children.
Foundation Before Function
For most people, Functional support is best used alongside a species-appropriate whole-food human diet and the appropriate Adaptive and/or Nourishing foundation.
A Functional formulation may also be used first when a more immediate or pronounced respiratory need requires focused support.
Wholehearted Harmony Master Herbal Formulations are not designed to be indiscriminately stacked. Combining multiple herbal formulations without considering overlapping botanicals, physiological actions, medications, duration, and individual needs can create unnecessary complexity.
If you are considering using this formulation alongside another Wholehearted Harmony blend or herbal tea, please review Using Multiple Animal Blends & Herbal Teas in the Educational Library before combining them.

Licorice Root — Functional Properties: Rich in glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, saponins, polysaccharides, and other compounds traditionally valued for mucosal protection, expectoration, respiratory comfort, inflammatory regulation, and tissue resilience. Whole-Systems: Bridges upper-respiratory and mucosal physiology with digestive, immune, inflammatory, and stress-response pathways. Its soothing and demulcent character helps protect irritated tissues while also supporting healthy movement of respiratory secretions. Vitamins & Minerals: Potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and smaller amounts of zinc and manganese.
Sage Leaf — Functional Properties: Contains rosmarinic acid, diterpenes, flavonoids, tannins, and aromatic oils including thujone- and cineole-related compounds. Sage supports throat and upper-respiratory tissue comfort, healthy mucus regulation, astringent tissue tone, antioxidant defenses, and inflammatory balance. Whole-Systems: Extends across respiratory, oral, digestive, nervous-system, and microbial physiology. Its astringent and aromatic character makes it particularly relevant when throat irritation, excess secretions, or upper-respiratory tissue sensitivity are present. Vitamins & Minerals: Vitamins A and K; calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and manganese.
Ginger Root — Functional Properties: Rich in gingerols, shogaols, zingerone, and related phenolic compounds that support circulation, healthy inflammatory response, digestion, antioxidant defenses, and respiratory comfort. Whole-Systems: Connects circulatory, digestive, respiratory, inflammatory, and metabolic physiology. Its warming character supports movement and comfort during periods of seasonal illness while helping maintain digestive function and broader physiological resilience. Vitamins & Minerals: Potassium, magnesium, and manganese; smaller amounts of iron and zinc.
Cinnamon — Functional Properties: Rich in cinnamaldehyde, procyanidins, and other polyphenols that support antioxidant defenses, circulation, digestive function, inflammatory regulation, and microbial balance. Whole-Systems: Extends across circulatory, digestive, respiratory, metabolic, and antioxidant physiology. Its warming aromatic character supports circulation and comfort while complementing the soothing and expectorant herbs within the formulation. Vitamins & Minerals: Manganese, calcium, and iron; smaller amounts of potassium, zinc, and copper.
Mullein — Functional Properties: Rich in mucilage, saponins, flavonoids, iridoids, and other compounds traditionally valued for expectoration, mucus movement, respiratory tissue comfort, and healthy inflammatory response. Whole-Systems: Supports upper-respiratory, bronchial, mucosal, and inflammatory physiology. Its combination of demulcent and expectorant activity helps soothe irritated tissues while supporting appropriate movement of respiratory secretions. Vitamins & Minerals: Calcium, magnesium, potassium, and smaller amounts of iron; used primarily for its mucilage, saponins, and respiratory phytochemistry.
Optional Valerian Variation
Valerian Root — Functional Properties: Contains valerenic acids, volatile oils, lignans, and other compounds traditionally valued for nervous-system relaxation, smooth-muscle support, and restorative sleep. Whole-Systems: Connects nervous-system regulation with respiratory comfort, muscular relaxation, and sleep physiology. Within this optional variation, valerian is used specifically when repetitive or spasmodic coughing interferes with the body’s ability to settle and rest. Vitamins & Minerals: Used primarily for its valerenic acids, volatile constituents, and nervous-system phytochemistry rather than as a significant nutritional source of vitamins or minerals.
