  • Feeding kelp: There are many different views on feeding kelp to horses when it comes to dosage. The typical is 1-2 tablespoons a day for the average 1100 lb horse.

My feeding recommendations are based on much research and personal experience. There are two ways I suggest feeding:

    1. Feed for 2 - 3 weeks following the weight guidelines below, then stop and repeat every 2-3 months depending on the horses needs.

under 500 lbs -  1/2 tsp twice daily

    500-1000 lbs - 1/2 tbsp twice daily

    1000 - 1300 lbs - 1 tbsp twice daily

1300 lbs and over - 1..5 to 2 tbsp twice daily.

    2. place 1 cup in a feed pan/bucket and give free choice a few times a week. So this for a few weeks and then stop and repeat every 2 to 3 months.

Kelp can also be found in The natural Equine's IR and Senior Support.

  • PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR/VET. Although I feed my horses kelp, I do not personally use it for myself.

The FDA recommends a dietary intake of 150 micrograms (mcg) of iodine per day. One pound of raw kelp can contain up to 2,500 mcg of iodine.

**1/4 tsp or less daily with food or as directed by a doctor.

Ideas for incorporating kelp into the diet include:

    • adding organic, dried kelp into soups and stews
    • using raw kelp noodles in salads and main dishes
    • sprinkling dried kelp flakes onto foods as a seasoning
    • serving it cold with oil and sesame seeds
    • blending it into a vegetable juice
