Equine Lymphatic Recovery Protocol

Equine Lymphatic Recovery Protocol

Equine Lymphatic Recovery Protocol is a two-phase transitional formulation designed to support lymphatic movement, tissue-fluid balance, immune regulation, and recovery in horses experiencing persistent swelling, delayed tissue resolution, or broader patterns of lymphatic stagnation.

The lymphatic system is part of a much larger physiological network. It helps return fluid from the tissues to circulation, participates in immune surveillance, and supports normal movement of cellular debris and inflammatory by-products away from tissues. Its function is influenced by circulation, movement, tissue health, immune activity, inflammation, nutritional status, and the body's overall capacity to recover.

When lymphatic movement becomes less efficient, fluid may remain within tissues longer than it should. This can contribute to persistent puffiness, firmness, edema, slow tissue recovery, or drainage patterns that seem unable to fully resolve. These visible changes are not necessarily isolated problems within one limb or one area of the body; they may reflect a larger relationship between lymphatic flow, circulation, immune activity, inflammation, and tissue repair.

This protocol was developed to address that larger biological picture rather than simply attempting to make swelling disappear. It provides an extended first phase of gentle lymphatic, hepatic, nutritive, digestive, and immune support before moving into a shorter second phase of more concentrated botanical activity.

The approach is intentionally gradual. Phase 1 establishes movement and support first. Phase 2 adds deeper, short-term support only after that foundation has been established.

Rooted in a species-appropriate, forage-first framework, Equine Lymphatic Recovery Protocol is intended for defined periods of greater lymphatic demand rather than continuous daily supplementation.

Why This Protocol Is Phased

The lymphatic system is not approached here as something that simply needs to be “flushed.”

Phase 1 — Nourish & Move is used for approximately 30 days and provides gentler support for lymphatic movement, tissue-fluid balance, digestion, hepatic function, immune resilience, and nutritional recovery.

Only after Phase 1 is completed does the protocol move into

Phase 2 A & B — Deeper Clearing & Immune Response.

Phase 2 introduces barberry and echinacea separately for a shorter 10–12 day period. These are more concentrated, physiologically active botanicals that are being used purposefully for a defined role rather than as indefinite daily herbs.

Short-term use does not mean these botanicals are inherently unsafe. It means dose, duration, and botanical role have been matched to the purpose of the protocol. The same herb may appropriately appear elsewhere in a formulation at a different proportion, duration, or physiological purpose.

Who This Protocol Is For

  • Horses experiencing persistent or recurring tissue swelling
  • Horses recovering from wounds, injury, infection, or periods of significant inflammation
  • Horses with slow tissue resolution or prolonged lymphatic congestion
  • Horses whose recovery pattern suggests broader support of lymphatic, circulatory, immune, and elimination pathways may be appropriate
  • Horses requiring structured transitional support rather than a daily maintenance formula

How This Protocol Fits Into a Whole-Horse Plan

Equine Lymphatic Recovery Protocol belongs within Wholehearted Harmony's Transitional Support layer.

Persistent edema, drainage, heat, pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, lameness, or wounds that are not healing appropriately should not automatically be treated as a simple lymphatic issue and warrant veterinary evaluation.

For chronic or recurring patterns, the larger picture should also be considered, including movement, nutrition, circulation, inflammatory load, previous injury or illness, metabolic health, and overall recovery capacity.

Important Medication Consideration

If your horse is currently receiving medication, please contact Wholehearted Harmony before beginning this protocol. Medication use, the reason for treatment, and the botanical ingredients being considered should be reviewed before adding concentrated herbal support.

Feeding & Use Notes

  • This is a two-phase transitional protocol
  • Phase 1: approximately 30 days
  • Complete Phase 1 before beginning Phase 2
  • Phase 2: approximately 10–12 days
  • Barberry and echinacea are supplied separately during Phase 2
  • This protocol is not intended for continuous daily use
  • A break should be provided before considering another complete round
  • Best used within a species-appropriate, forage-centered diet
  • Feeding amounts are based on the average 1,000 lb horse
  • Individual needs may vary according to body size, health history, severity, and circumstances
  • Consultation is encouraged for chronic, severe, or recurring lymphatic concerns

Using With Core Essentials

If your horse is currently receiving a Wholehearted Harmony Core Essentials formulation, please contact Wholehearted Harmony before beginning this protocol. Because this is a longer, two-phase transitional protocol, the appropriate Core feeding amount should be considered alongside the specific Core formulation being used, the botanical overlap, and the individual horse.

If a Functional Support formulation is also needed, please contact Wholehearted Harmony before combining it with this protocol so total botanical intake, formulation synergy, and feeding amounts can be reviewed.

This two-phase protocol begins with gentle lymphatic, nutritive, hepatic, digestive, and immune support before introducing a shorter period of more concentrated botanical activity. The sequencing is intentional: establish movement and resilience first, then progress to deeper transitional support.

PHASE 1 — NOURISH & MOVE

CALENDULA PETALS

Targeted Support:
Supports lymphatic movement, tissue repair, skin integrity, gastrointestinal tissues, and normal inflammatory regulation.

Whole-Systems Support:
Calendula contains triterpenoids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and polysaccharides that support tissue repair, immune activity, inflammatory balance, and lymphatic function. Its affinity for skin and mucosal tissues makes it particularly useful when lymphatic concerns accompany tissue injury or slow recovery.

Nutritional Contribution:
Provides carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, and modest mineral content; its primary contribution is phytochemical and tissue-supportive.

CLEAVERS

Targeted Support:
Supports lymphatic movement, tissue-fluid balance, urinary elimination, and skin health.

Whole-Systems Support:
Iridoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, and plant acids support gentle movement of interstitial fluid and normal lymphatic and urinary function without positioning cleavers as an aggressive eliminative herb.

Nutritional Contribution:
Provides chlorophyll, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and modest mineral content.

YELLOW DOCK ROOT

Targeted Support:
Supports digestive function, bile-associated activity, bowel regularity, and normal elimination.

Whole-Systems Support:
Bitter constituents, tannins, and anthraquinone-related compounds influence digestive secretions and intestinal movement while supporting hepatic and gastrointestinal pathways associated with normal clearance.

Nutritional Contribution:
Provides plant polyphenols and trace minerals; its principal role is phytochemical rather than nutritive.

DANDELION ROOT

Targeted Support:
Supports liver and biliary function, digestion, gastrointestinal ecology, and metabolic processing.

Whole-Systems Support:
Inulin, bitter sesquiterpene lactones, and phenolic acids support digestive secretions, bile-associated digestion, microbial ecology, and normal hepatic function.

Nutritional Contribution:
Provides inulin, plant fiber, potassium, and trace minerals, with meaningful prebiotic support for the gastrointestinal environment.

ASTRAGALUS ROOT

Targeted Support:
Supports immune resilience, recovery, tissue integrity, circulation, and physiological adaptation.

Whole-Systems Support:
Astragalus contains polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, and other compounds that influence immune signaling, antioxidant defenses, vascular function, and adaptive recovery. Its role here is supportive and restorative rather than simply “immune boosting.”

Nutritional Contribution:
Provides polysaccharides, flavonoids, saponins, amino acids, and trace minerals; its primary value lies in its broad phytochemistry.

LICORICE ROOT

Targeted Support:
Supports mucosal integrity, digestive comfort, inflammatory regulation, immune balance, and stress adaptation.

Whole-Systems Support:
Glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides contribute demulcent, immune-modulating, and tissue-protective activity while supporting gastrointestinal and broader stress-response physiology.

Nutritional Contribution:
Used primarily for glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, saponins, polysaccharides, and related phytochemistry rather than substantial nutrient delivery.

PHASE 2 A & B — DEEPER CLEARING & IMMUNE RESPONSE

BARBERRY

Targeted Support:
Supports bitter digestive activity, hepatobiliary function, bile flow, microbial balance, and short-term metabolic support.

Whole-Systems Support:
Barberry is rich in berberine and related isoquinoline alkaloids that influence digestive secretions, microbial ecology, inflammatory signaling, and normal liver-associated function. Its concentrated phytochemistry is intentionally reserved for the shorter second phase.

Nutritional Contribution:
Used primarily for berberine and related alkaloids rather than meaningful vitamin or mineral contribution.

ECHINACEA PURPUREA

Targeted Support:
Supports immune responsiveness, lymphatic activity, mucosal defense, and recovery during periods of increased immune demand.

Whole-Systems Support:
Alkylamides, caffeic-acid derivatives, polysaccharides, and other constituents interact with innate immune signaling and inflammatory pathways. Echinacea is intentionally used here during the shorter second phase rather than as a permanent daily immune herb.

Nutritional Contribution:
Its principal value is phytochemical, providing alkylamides, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and related immune-active constituents.
