Birth is the very first chapter of life, and just like in humans, it can be both miraculous and challenging. For foals, the birthing process is intenseāespecially if it's prolonged, complicated, or forceful. While most foals appear to "bounce back" quickly, what isnāt always visible is the tension or trauma they may carry in their bodies long after delivery.

What Is Birth Trauma in Foals?
Birth trauma refers to the physical and emotional stress a foal may experience during or shortly after birth. Common causes include:
Prolonged or difficult labor (dystocia)
Malposition in the womb or during delivery
Use of force during birth (pulling, chains, etc.)
Emergency C-section or very rapid delivery
Umbilical cord pressure or oxygen deprivation
Stressful or abrupt first handling
Premature birth, which can result in incomplete ossificationĀ (underdeveloped bones and joints)
Foals born even slightly early may have softer joints, weaker ligaments, and skeletal areas that havenāt fully formed, putting them at higher risk for discomfort, injury, and developmental issues.
Signs a Foal May Be Holding Birth Trauma
Watch for subtle signs like:
Difficulty nursing, especially favoring one side
Jaw tension or tightness in the poll or neck
Crooked tail or head tilt
Trouble lying down or rising evenly
Hypersensitivity or appearing āshut downā
Asymmetrical gaits or unusual movement
These are often the foalās way of saying, āIām not fully comfortable in my body.ā
How Birth Trauma Release Works

Using gentle hands-on techniques such as:
Craniosacral therapy
Myofascial release
Kinesiology taping for support
ā¦Birth Trauma Release (BTR) helps your foal unwind physical tension and emotional stressĀ stored during or after birth. These sessions are non-invasive, deeply calming, and safe for even the youngest foals.
Many times, a single session can create remarkable changes in posture, movement, and emotional well-being.
Why Early Support Matters
When left unresolved, birth-related tension can lead to long-term issues such as:
Chronic musculoskeletal imbalance
Delayed or uneven development
Behavioral and training challenges
Lameness due to compensation patterns
For preemies, lack of ossification means early support is even more important for skeletal and joint health
By gently supporting the body early on, we give the foal the best chance at a balanced, pain-free, and successful future.
