*DE helps support the immune system, digestion and because Diatomaceous Earth is a form of silica it is known to give horses strong hoofs, healthier and shinier coats and manes. Diatomaceous Earth is also known to reduce internal and external worms and parasites in horses as well as providing them a boost of minerals such as calcium and magnesium to support a healthier digestion. Diatomaceous Earth is a great absorbent and will act to reduce odours in manures too.

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural sedimentary rock formed from the 30 million-years-old chalky remains of microscopic algae-like plants. DE has a variety of uses that fall into several different categories, and is often used as a facial exfoliator, as a household cleaner and deodorizer, and it can also be used as a natural pesticide.

What does Food Grade mean for Diatomaceous Earth?

Our Food Grade DE has not been treated with high heat and contains less than 1% of crystalline silica, and it considered GRAS by the FDA. GRAS uses for DE include to be used in food processing as a filtration aid as a component of composite filtration media.

However, there are other forms of DE commonly sold for other uses that are not appropriate for use in the same manner of food grade DE. For example, pool grade DE has been treated with high heat and contains a very high level of crystalline silica, which is very dangerous for the health of humans and animals and should be avoided for anything but its intended use (pool filtration).

  • I do not use DE every day. It is our the Equine Anti-parasitic Support blend. However, there are other suggested uses. Please be sure to check fecal counts as well.

    Some suggestions:

    1. The suggested rate of food grade DE for a 1,000 lb horse is 1 cup a day. This should go according to your horses worm load and fecal counts.

    2. Some feel it should be used (straight without herbs) for a minimum of 60 days, with fecal count in between.

    3. Some use it daily, using about 1/4 cup twice a day for the average 1000lb horse.

Again, consult with vet and always stop using something, if you see any negative changes.
